Murdoch Core <br />Laboratory building has a fruit and vegetable <br />therned fresco painted wither its dome. The <br />painted lettuce is 11 feet long and the pine- <br />apple is 18 feet long. It took artists nearly <br />two months of painting 12 -15 hours a day for <br />7 days a week. The lobby is lined with over <br />250,000 pounds of marble imported from <br />Camera, Italy. <br />k J:_ <br />seamlessly flow into the existing downtown, affection- <br />ately named Cannon Village. A pedestrian tunnel is be- <br />ing built under an existing five -lane thoroughfare con- <br />necting the campus to the city's downtown Village Park <br />and its greenway system. <br />The residential component of the NCRC will include <br />apartments above retail. On the other end of the de- <br />velopment, townhomes and condos will be built. This <br />residential component will extend from the campus' <br />main footprint and flow into the existing residential <br />mill village that surrounds the downtown. <br />The original total cost of campus infrastructure was <br />projected to be $273 million, excluding about $175 <br />million for the parking decks, some of <br />which will be taxable private property. <br />The original TIF package included two <br />public parking decks, roads, water /sew- <br />er lines, parks, six miles of greenways, <br />13 intersection improvements, side- <br />walks, bike lanes, streetscapes, and oth- <br />er projects related to creating a strong <br />sense of place around the campus. <br />The details of the economic development invest- <br />ment are to be worked out but will almost certainly be <br />tied to job creation and will be designed to encourage <br />private sector investment. The city's role will likely be to <br />provide additional public infrastructure associated with <br />additional campus growth. There are a number of op- <br />tions being considered. <br />From the outset, the NCRC was designed to be a <br />live, work, play environment. The redevelopment plans <br />include five parks, one of which will be a seven -acre <br />courtyard in the heart of the campus. There are <br />a number of options being considered. <br />Major intersections and corridors in and around <br />downtown will be improved as the NCRC continues to <br />develop. Roads will be widened, turn lanes added, and <br />traffic lights will be upgraded. From the start, there <br />were 24 total projects related to roads, stretching from <br />the core of the campus to the main arteries throughout <br />the city. These road and traffic improvements are criti- <br />cal to support the estimated 50,000 additional vehicles <br />per day projected around the downtown area when <br />the campus is completed. The busiest highway in and <br />around downtown Kannapolis currently carries far less <br />than 20,000 vehicles per day. <br />Roads and streetscapes will also be completed on <br />campus. One project includes widening one of the main <br />entry points to the campus, NC Highway 3, to Kan - <br />napolis Parkway and Interstate 85. Murdoch Core Laboratory building is crowned with a dorne that is 19 feet high <br />and 38 feet in diameter, and it offers the best views of the city. <br />
