Draft 1.1 -- Not for Distribution or Circulation
• Global Companies — Most of the larger companies in Cabarrus County are
branch factories or offices, not headquarters. Hence a large job gap is
managers of corporations and subsidiaries.
• Intermediaries — Even though Cabarrus has a greater- than - average
manufacturing sector, that sector is outsourcing its needs for couriers,
trucking, and air transportation.
• Education —The second highest job gap is for "colleges, universities, and
professional schools." The Research Triangle region is rich in this sector, but
Cabarrus County relatively poor. Private education at the primary and
secondary levels is also well below the national average.
• Tourism— Cabarrus is trying to be a tourist magnet centered around NAS CAR
and Great Wolf Lodge, but currently lacks hotels and bars.
• Food & Retail — Despite the presence of major shopping malls, the County
has several prominent gaps, including warehouse clubs, supermarkets (plus
grocery wholesalers), and department stores.
• Utilities — There's a gap in electric power distribution.
Note that there are very few large -job manuafacturing opportunities on the top -40 list.
This is because local demand for any given manufacturer is small. Most manufacturers
must serve a broader population, regionally or globally, to achieve competitive scale. An
exception, where local production could generate a significant number of new jobs, is
iron and steel mills.
22
Attachment number 1
1 -4 Page 324
