McConnell American Legion <br />Oakwood Cemetery Military Burial Roster <br />C.-2. <br />Post 51 Presentation of 2023 Edition of the <br />BRIEF SUMMARY: <br />The Fred Y McConnell American Legion Post 51 in Concord would like to present to <br />Cabarrus County and the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Department copies of the 2023 Edition <br />of the Oakwood Cemetery Military Burial Roster which contains the names and <br />documentations of 1,619 war casualties and veterans buried in Oakwood Cemetery. <br />Post 51 would also like to present a copy of the 2023 roster to the Cabarrus County Library <br />Lore History Room. <br />The 2023 Edition contains the history of and names of the Cabarrus County Veterans who <br />were responsible for the building of, running of, conducting court, and the Sheriff of our 1876 <br />historic courthouse. The vast majority of these veterans are buried in Oakwood Cemetery <br />and this roster contains their names with documentation of military service and their <br />responsibilities associated with our 1876 historic courthouse. This edition is dedicated to a <br />veteran and fallen Police Officer, Ralph C. Kennerly. Ralph C. Kennerly served in Co L, the <br />Concord National Guard Company, in the 1916 - 1917 Mexican Punitive Expedition to the <br />border and as a Pfc. Military Policeman in France during WWI with the 30th "Old Hickory" <br />Division. Upon returning home to Concord after the war he joined the Concord Police <br />Department and soon died of gunshot wounds on 19 October 1920. Ralph Kennerly is buried <br />in Oakwood Cemetery. His grave is maintained by Post 51 with a bronze American Legion <br />grave maker topped with a United States of America Flag and a blue ribbon. Officer Kennerly <br />also has a memorial at the Concord Police Department <br />REQUESTED ACTION: <br />Page 14 <br />
