Kay Honeycutt
From: John Day
Sent: Thursday, October 01, 2009 1:11 PM
To: _BOC
Cc: Kay Honeycutt; Mike Downs; Pam Dubois; Jonathan Marshall
Subject: I-85 Widening -Local Officials Meeting
Attachments: NCDOT -Widening of I-85 from 1-485 to NC 73 Interchange; FW: September 24 Interagency
Meeting
Good afternoon,
Monday you received email notice from Angela of a meeting at 3pm today to meet with NCDOT officials to review and
discuss the I-85 widening project and associated road realignments. The DOT recommended realignment of Pitts School
Road will bisect the Barbee Farm, which is in the EVAD and has been operated by 6 generations of Barbees - it a
recognized by the state as a Century Farm.
There is an alternative route that does not bisect the farm and there is an organized effort by folks in the region
concerned about farm preservation to appear at the public hearing tonight to speak in favor of the alternative route.
The NC Dept. of Agriculture has become involved (see attached email from Dewitt Hardee). Mr. Hardee's email includes
an attachment of the website posted by those seeking to convince DOT to take the alternate route that doesn't bisect
the farm -you may view the two routes in that attachment.
The chairman and I will attend the 3 pm meeting to speak on behalf of the alternate route for Pitts School Road.
Please call if you have any questions.
John
John Day
Cabarrus County Manager
704-920-2895
www.cabarruscounty.us
~-~ 293
