j abarrus County heriff's Department Robert M. Canaday, Sheriff Sergeant Ronnie C. Smith Sergeant Smith became a Deputy Sherkffin November of 1966 as an Auxiliary officer and became a full time officer on August 1, 1975. Between November of 1966 and August 1, 1975 Ronnie worked 100's of hours in the patrol division with full time officers as a public service without compensation. During his career with the department, Sergeant Smith, has worked in the patrol, communications, hospital, and jail divisions. Since coming with the department in 1975 he earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Central Piedmont Community College in 1977 and his Bachelors Degree in Law Enforcement and Administration fi-om UNCC in 1980. He has amassed over 500 hours of specialized law enforcement training and has always been eager to learn new things and take on new challenges. Sergeant Smiths most recent assignment has been as a Sergeant assigned to the jail division, where his electronics background has proven to be an invaluable asset as we have moved the department into the age of computers and electronically controlled devices. We will certainly miss his expertise in the electronic equipment area since he has taken on the responsibility of troubleshooting and repairing much of the equipment that we use daily in the jail environment. When something doesn't work, its always "Call Sgt. Smith he will take care of it", and he always does. Sergeant Smith has served the citizens of Cabarrus County with pride, integrity, and devotion during his service as an auxiliary and full time officer for almost 30 years.
