Cabarrus County Commissioners elected and in office in 1876: <br />R. W. Allison, Chairman <br />Robert "Wash" Washington Allison, born 24 April 1809, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC. His occupation was farmer and <br />merchant. On 16 Feb 1839 he along with John T. Phifer, Daniel Moreau Barringer, and Gen. Paul Mathias Barringer started the <br />Concord Steam Cotton Factory which produced cotton yarn, shirting, and nails. Daniel Moreau Barringer would become a U.S. <br />Representative and person friend of Abraham Lincoln. Gen. Paul Mathias Barringer, War of 1812, who died in 1844 was the <br />father of Daniel Moreau Barringer, Maj. Victor Clay Barringer, co-founder of Co F "Cabarrus Rangers" who would host Pres. <br />Jefferson Davis in his Concord home when Pres. Davis was on his escape route. Victor would later become a Judge on the <br />World Court of Appeals in Cairo, Egypt, and Gen. Rufus Barringer, 15t NC Cavalry, and Paul Barringer who had moved to <br />Mississippi, acquiring a large amount of land in the "Chickasaw Purchase" becoming a Planter, a member of the Mississippi <br />Legislature and one of the founders of the University of Mississippi. In 1859 the mills was sold to John McDonald and his sons, <br />one of which was James McDonald. The cotton mill was renamed "John McDonald and Sons Steam Cotton Factory". In 1877 <br />the mill was sold to Capt. John Milton Odell, Co M, 22nd NC Infantry and renamed "Odell — Locke Cotton Mill". Capt. John <br />Milton Odell was married to Elisabeth Adeline "Annie" Allison the daughter of Robert Washington Allison. Robert served as <br />Postmaster of Concord in the 1830's. Register of Deeds 1839 —1840 and four terms as a Justice of the Local Court of Pleas and <br />Quarter Sessions. "Wash" was the first Chairman of Cabarrus County Schools serving from 1841— 1847. <br />"Wash"served as Chairman of Cabarrus County Commissioners until 1878. He wrote the first history of Cabarrus County and <br />served as a Trustee of Davidson College 1870 —1874. He and his wife Sarah were members of First Presbyterian Church in <br />Concord. He and Sarah Phifer were married in Concord on 31 May 1842. They had five surviving children. Sarah Phifer Allison <br />is the daughter of John T. Phifer born 1 September 1779 died 18 October 1845 and Ester "Hattie" Fulenwider Phifer born 3 <br />October 1781 Lincoln County, NC died 15 March 1846 Cabarrus County. John and "Hattie" Phifer are buried in the Phifer Family <br />Cemetery in Concord. Sarah Phifer Allison is the sister of Elizabeth Phifer Gibson who was married to James C. Gibson the <br />Cabarrus County Clerk of Superior Court 1872 —1871. Sarah is also the sister of Robert "Wash" Washington Allison and his wife <br />Sarah Phifer Allison are buried in the Memorial Garden Cemetery in Concord. "Wash" was the county's oldest and most <br />prominent citizen when he died 21 September1898, age 89. <br />M.L. Bost <br />Martin Luther Bost was born in Cabarrus County to John H. and Catharine Boger Bost, both of whom are buried at St. John's <br />Lutheran Church. John H. Bost was the founder of the historic 1810 Bost Grist Mill located on Hwy. 200 south of Concord. They <br />were the parents of twelve children. <br />Martin Bost enlisted as 3rd Cpl. on 15 June 1861 in a Co F "Cabarrus Rangers" a cavalry company being formed in Concord by <br />Rufus and Victor Barrlinger. Co F "Cabarrus Rangers" would be in the 15t NC Cavalry Regt., 9th NC State Troops with Rufus <br />Barringer later rising to the rank of General of the 15t. NC Cavalry Regiment. Martin served with the "Cabarrus Rangers" and <br />was promoted to Sgt. before he was discharged at age 35 on 15 May 1863 when he furnished a substitute. <br />About 1855, Martin married Rosetta Crowell. One of Martin and Rosetta's children was Mary Ella Bost born 1 March 1857, died <br />4 May 1938. Mary Ella married James William Cannon, born 25 April 1852 in Mecklenburg County, died 19 December 1921. <br />William or better known as J.W. was the founder of Cannon Mills Inc. One of their sons Charles Albert went on to become <br />President and Chairman of Cannon Mills. Charles was better known as C.A. Cannon. Martin Luther Bost is the grandfather of <br />C.A. Cannon and the great great grandfather of Robin Hayes who would be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. <br />Martin Luther Bost and wife Rosetta Crowell Bost are buried in the St. Paul's Methodist Church Cemetery located on Hwy 200 <br />nest to the Bost Grist Mill property. Mary Ella Bost Cannon and her husband James William Cannon along with many members <br />of the Cannon family, to include C.A. Cannon, are buried in Oakwood Cemetery. <br />D.S.
