The division is also a liaison with other
community agencies in developing recreational opportuni-
ties for special populations. In addition, the division super-
visor acts as local coordinator for both Cabarrus Senior
Games and Cabarrus Special Olympics.

Special Events

1996 - 97 county-wide special events included:

Thanksgiving "Leftovers" Race: Historic Downtown
Concord was the site of the second Thanksgiving "Left-
overs" 8K, 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run. Held on the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, participants were awarded left over tro-
phies and shirts. Cooperative Christian Ministries was the
beneficiary of proceeds from the race.

WesternFest, A sanctioned Junior Rodeo: This western
style festival was held at Frank Liske Park in mid-October.
County music, western style food, western tack and wear,
and a cow patty bingo raffle were all part of this popular
event. Over 1000 were in attendance, along with over 100
participants in the Junior Rodeo.

Holiday Highlight: Frank Liske Park was again the site of
the annual Holiday Highlight, as over 3000 people enjoyed
this festival of lights holiday celebration.
