The Boll Weevil 5K Home Run, and 1 Mile Fun Walk: <br />The first annual road race was co-sponsored by the Pied- <br />mont Boil Weevils minor league baseball team. The race <br />was held at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis prior <br />to a Boll Weevil game in early June. Awards were presented <br />by the mascot, the Weevil, and winners were announced <br />during that night's game. Also, Boll Weevil door prizes were <br />given during the awards ceremony. <br /> <br />Big Screen Outdoor Movie - "Independence Day": This <br />unique event was held on the last Saturday in June on a <br />ballfield at Frank Liske Park, beginning at dusk. Big Surf <br />International Entertainment Company provided a giant <br />movie screen and sound system to provide a drive-in movie <br />atmosphere. Threatening storm c[ouds safely passed through <br />the area, as movie goers enjoyed the show on blankets, lawn <br />chairs and bleachers. <br /> <br />Cabarrus Special Olympics <br /> <br /> Cabarrus Special Olympics is a county-wide program <br />designed to serve mentally retarded individuals living in <br />Cabarrus County by providing athletic training and compe- <br />tition. The program involves individuals living indepen- <br />dently, in group homes, and with their families. The coor- <br />dinator and 12 member steering committee, consisting of <br />representatives from the medical field, the local school sys- <br />tem, human service agencies, parents, athletes and civic <br />groups oversee the program. The Special Populations / Spe- <br />cial Events Supervisor, working in conjunction with the <br />steering committee, is responsible for developing a year <br />round local training and competition program, recruiting <br />new athletes, hosting local competition, and fund raising. <br /> <br /> In the past year, Cabarrus Special Olympics partici- <br />pated in the following training and competitive areas: <br /> <br />Winter Program: The alpine ski program consists of eight <br />weeks of dryland training and culminates with the North <br />Carolina Special Olympics Winter Olympics in Boone, at- <br />tended by 12 local athletes and six coaches. <br /> <br />12 <br /> <br /> <br />
