The Boll Weevil 5K Home Run, and 1 Mile Fun Walk: The first annual road race was co-sponsored by the Pied- mont Boil Weevils minor league baseball team. The race was held at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis prior to a Boll Weevil game in early June. Awards were presented by the mascot, the Weevil, and winners were announced during that night's game. Also, Boll Weevil door prizes were given during the awards ceremony. Big Screen Outdoor Movie - "Independence Day": This unique event was held on the last Saturday in June on a ballfield at Frank Liske Park, beginning at dusk. Big Surf International Entertainment Company provided a giant movie screen and sound system to provide a drive-in movie atmosphere. Threatening storm c[ouds safely passed through the area, as movie goers enjoyed the show on blankets, lawn chairs and bleachers. Cabarrus Special Olympics Cabarrus Special Olympics is a county-wide program designed to serve mentally retarded individuals living in Cabarrus County by providing athletic training and compe- tition. The program involves individuals living indepen- dently, in group homes, and with their families. The coor- dinator and 12 member steering committee, consisting of representatives from the medical field, the local school sys- tem, human service agencies, parents, athletes and civic groups oversee the program. The Special Populations / Spe- cial Events Supervisor, working in conjunction with the steering committee, is responsible for developing a year round local training and competition program, recruiting new athletes, hosting local competition, and fund raising. In the past year, Cabarrus Special Olympics partici- pated in the following training and competitive areas: Winter Program: The alpine ski program consists of eight weeks of dryland training and culminates with the North Carolina Special Olympics Winter Olympics in Boone, at- tended by 12 local athletes and six coaches. 12
