Fall Program: The aquatics team trained and competed <br />over a nine month period beginning in September. The nine <br />member and four coach team practices weekly at the Can- <br />non Memorial YMCA in Kannapolis. A bocce team was <br />organized for the fall season, with five athletes and two <br />coaches participating. After competing in invitational and <br />regional meets, both the aquatics and bocce teams attended <br />the North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh. In addition <br />to the swim team, two coaches and 15 volunteers conducted <br />a five week "Leam to Swim" program for 20 nonswim- <br />mers. <br /> <br />Spring Program: Teams training and competing during <br />the spring season included: track and field; aquatics; uni- <br />fied softball; and two new teams, gymnastics and unified <br />volleyball. After eight weeks of training and invitational <br />and regional competition, teams traveled to Raleigh with <br />the Cabarrus Special Olympics delegation to the North Caro- <br />lina Special Olympics Summer Games. <br /> <br />Cabarrus Special Olympic Local Spring Games: In Janu- <br />ary, Cabarrus County Schools and human service agencies <br />began training athletes in track and field competition and <br />motor activity events in preparation for the local spring <br />games held in April. Approximately 700 local athletes, <br />coaches and volunteers participated in the Cabarrus Spe- <br />cial Olympics Spring Games held at Mt. Pleasant High <br />School. <br /> <br />Cabarrus Senior Games <br /> <br /> As the Cabarrus Senior Games local coordinator, the <br />Special Populations/Special Events Supervisor works with <br />a ten member steering committee. The committee consists <br />of staff from county agencies and departments that provide <br />senior services and a number of active seniors fi.om the <br />county. The committee is responsible for fundraising, so- <br />liciting sponsors, locating various facilities, and communi- <br />cation and marketing the program to seniors in the county. <br />Cabarrus Senior Games has an open games policy which <br />allows an individual 55 years and better to compete in the <br />local games. <br /> <br />13 <br /> <br /> <br />
