League play for youth is offered in soccer, football, <br />basketball, baseball, slow-pitch softball, fast-pitch softball, <br />and coach pitch. Participants in these programs range in <br />age from 6 - 18. An instructional program is offered for <br />younger participants which focuses on teaching skills and <br />techniques associated with that sport. Adult leagues were <br />offered in softball for five different classifications - Men's <br />Open, Men's Church, Men's Industrial, Women's Open, <br />and Women's Church. <br /> The Athletic Division is constantly striving to improve <br />existing programs and expand into new programs. Athletic <br />programs are a valuable asset to the community and are <br />used as a leisure activity for many. With programs that in- <br />still valuable lessons in teamwork, fair play, participation <br />for ail, and sportsmanship, these programs will continue to <br />be a part of the community. <br /> <br />Youth Soccer <br /> <br /> Ninety-six (96) teams participated in leagues across the <br />county. Leagues are offered for boys and girls ages 6 - 17. <br />Games are played September through November on Sat- <br />urdays at local school sites and parks. A total of 1,344 play- <br />ers took part in the program. <br /> <br />Youth Football <br /> <br /> A youth football program is offered for boys ages 10 - <br />12. Leagues are operated by the Mt. Pleasant Football As- <br />sociation and the Cannon Memorial YMCA, and are open <br />to all county youth. Games are played on Saturdays at Mt. <br />Pleasant Middle School and the YMCA fields and are played <br />in October and November. Eight teams competed in the 1996 <br />program with a total of 147 participants. <br /> <br />Youth Basketball <br /> <br /> A total of 108 basketball teams and 1,296 participants <br />participated in this program that began in December and <br />ran into March. Games are played at various school sites, <br />recreation centers, and YMCA facilities. <br /> <br />15 <br /> <br /> <br />
